How to Cut your Heating Bill and Save Energy

Heating your home is getting more and more expensive as the years go by. And with the threat of global warming looming on the horizon, we are all going to have to find ways to cut the amount of energy that we use to heat our homes in the winter. Here are a few tips for doing just that.

Wrap up warm. If your feet are cold, your whole body will feel cold, so wear a nice pair of woolly socks around the house, and some warm slippers or house boots as well if your feet are still cold. Wear jumpers, and dress in layers to preserve heat. When you are sitting down, a blanket and a hot water bottle will help prevent you from feeling the chill.

Circulate excess heat. Plenty of activities around the house generate heat, and you can utilise this to heat your home. When you have a shower or bath, leave the door ajar so that the heat from the steam will circulate to other rooms, and turn the extractor fan off, as this will remove the hot air that you are hoping to use. Also, after you have used the oven, leave the oven door half open, as the excess heat will help to warm the kitchen.

Lower your thermostat. Turning down your thermostat by a few degrees can save a lot of energy, and the chances are that you won’t notice the difference. Try turning it down by one degree a week until you notice the cold, turn it back up by a degree, and leave it there for the winter. If you are going to be out of the house for a few hours, turn the heating down, but make sure you leave the water heater on or the pipes may freeze.

Lower your water heater. The water heater, which provides hot water from the tap, is usually set too high in most homes. You can usually turn it down by ten or more degrees without anyone realising or complaining.

Don’t let heat escape. When the heating is on, keep your doors and windows shut. If you have a fireplace that you are not using, close the flue and the doors to the fireplace. Also, turn off extractor fans when they are not needed.

Keep your boiler maintained. If your boiler is not working correctly, you could be wasting energy and putting lives at risk. Have your boiler checked on an annual basis by a Gas Safe certified engineer.
