Global carbon market growth stalls in 2009, trading volumes rise

LONDON, Jan 6 (Reuters) - Growth in the global carbon market stalled in 2009 as the economic downturn slashed industrial greenhouse gas emissions and dented carbon prices, despite a rise in traded volumes, analysts said on Wednesday.

The market for carbon credits edged up to $136 billion last year, compared with a World Bank estimate of $126 billion for 2008, Oslo-based Point Carbon said in a report.

Some 8.2 billion tonnes of climate-warming carbon dioxide were traded last year, up around 70 percent from 2008, indicating a rise in speculative trading.

The market has grown exponentially since its launch in 2005, when it was estimated to be worth around $10.8 billion.

The European Union's Emissions Trading Scheme, the world's largest carbon market, dominated trade with 5.6 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide changing hands in 2009, worth $105 billion. This was up from 3.1 billion tonnes worth $92 billion traded in 2008.

EU permit prices <CFI2Zc1>, considered the global benchmark, fell by 21 percent last year and are now down nearly 60 percent from 2008's highs.

Point Carbon said 2009's weighted-average world carbon price was 11.40 euros ($16.37) per tonne, down from 18.87 euros ($27.10) in 2008.
