Solucar: Solar Farm
This could be a sample of things to come in the future. An 11MW Solar Thermal Power station lighting more than 6000 homes in Southern Spain.
The power station can be described nothing less than a piece of great engineering and attraction. Generating power to light a whole city without emitting any carbon and green house gases giving us a ray of Sun Hope and step in the direction of what can be called as the next age: Renewable Energy Age.
The Structure and Technology
Plant is hosted in Seville, Spain and is governed by Solucar, the company behind the project's research and development. More than 500 steel reflectors concentrate sun light on a giant heat receiver installed on top of a 115 meter tower. Heat is then converted into steam which is used to turn turbines to produce electricity.
Once fully operational it can go on to produce 23GWh of electricity per year.
The heat produced in the day is stored in huge tanks which can then be used to turn turbines in the night when Sun goes down. Current infrastructure and maintenance cost is on a higher side, and almost costs 3 times more than if produced using the conventional methods. Though taking into consideration of new innovations and more development in this area, the cost is expected to come down affirm the people behind the project.
In the End
The ambitious project surely shows some promise and can be categorized in the league of projects which when put together have potential to curb carbon emission and stop climate change.
