Project Green Hands
Project Green Hands, the biggest project undertaken by mankind to plant more than 700 thousand trees in a single day. The Guinness world record holder now aims higher with huge people participation and planting more than 2 million trees in a single day on 2nd Oct 2007.
Project green hands is a non-profit project governed by Isha Foundation, India which aim to tackle ecological problems prevailing in Southern part of India. The project has been in running from 2005 and has achieved some good success in the past years.
“114 millions trees is the target to increase the green cover in Tamil Nadu by 10%, thus allowing the state to come closer to the ideal level of 33% of green cover set nationally by the Forest Department of India" claims the website.
Project not only aims at planting trees and seedlings but also spreading awareness for the cause of climate change and Global Warming. Organizing seminars and expos, reaching out to more and more people making it easier for the common man to participate and make a difference.
85% of the trees will be planted in villages and 15% of the trees in school and colleges in next 4 years. The project aims at solving many problems with a simple solution. Some of the benefits aimed to be achieved:
- Increase in green cover of the area
- Eco-resource generation
- Fresh Air
- Prevention of land erosion
- Increase in Water table of the area, Rain Harvesting
- Improvement in Climate cycle and temperature reduction
PGH is a huge initiative and need as many people participation across cities and states. With more than a 200 thousand active volunteers who extended their support for the cause earlier and with hundreds and thousands more joining by every passing day, it can well become the biggest joint effort ever taken on Earth.
